Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting range of wagering options and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, along with many battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha/8.
