Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker player in the world by quite a few of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa taught him penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wished to learn anything he could about poker. He would tell his parents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He didn’t let the negative comments from others destroy his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.
Phil began playing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a teaching experience and winning was not a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he destroyed many of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to discipline and an eternal passion for the game of poker. Phil says that he is learning every single day and is very humble about his accomplishments. He admits to making errors in each session of poker and always strives to get better.
Although Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he prefers destroying money games on a regular basis.
