Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved gambling on various card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and moved to New York to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on the game.
The actual advancement in his game happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would regularly compete against one another. Howard was able to access a number of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker arena today. Howard moved to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
