Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he loved taking part in various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he played many hours and lost most times. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he might better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus more on poker.
The definite advancement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would regularly challenge each other. He had access into several of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
