Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha hi lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in almost all poker games.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.
While it seems difficult initially, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an exciting collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several players battling for the high hand, as well as many trying for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha hi low.
