Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players can get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in nearly all poker games.
A low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of play with ease.
