Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players can get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
While it seems complicated initially, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing collection of wagering possibilities and because you have several individuals battling for the high hand, along with several battling for the low hand.
